Norfolk winter walks for January
As the saying goes, there’s no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothes, so pack your warmest coat, hat, scarf and gloves, and perhaps a pair of wellies or walking boots, and enjoy North Norfolk’s stunning scenery with some good long walks, the perfect way to boost your winter wellbeing.
Keep it close to home with a short walk around the Heacham Circular, which starts at South Beach and goes along the promenade to the southern tip of Hunstanton, before returning along the sea wall. Or go further and continue along the promenade and follow the path to Old Hunstanton’s stripy clifftops and iconic lighthouse – the adjoining path leads down to Old Hunstanton beach which is famous for its white sand dunes and beach huts.
Alternatively, follow the shoreline from Heacham’s South Beach in the other direction to RSPB Snettisham, where you may be lucky enough to catch the magnificent sight and sound of thousands of Pink-footed Geese taking flight or passing overhead. You can continue along the newly extended King Charles III England Coast Path as far as Sutton Bridge if your legs are willing!
For a crisp country walk, head to one of Norfolk’s grand estates and explore thousands of acres of stunning parkland. Closest to Heacham Manor is the Royal Sandringham Estate which has two dog-friendly, way-marked trails, or head along the coast to Holkham to explore the Palladian Hall and estate and spot the resident fallow deer roaming the grounds.
Towards the end of the month, you might be lucky enough to catch sight of the first snowdrops – a welcome sign that spring is on its way – and one of the best spots to enjoy them is Walsingham Abbey, where 18 acres of grounds are magically transformed into a sea of the white blooms this season.
